heres my list of places you should REALLY, REALLY go to. not cheap by any means, but much more affordable than the other things on your list:

- the house, north beach san francisco: asian fusion, but not the pretentious expensive crappy asian fusion.
- ame, SOMA san francisco: asian fusion (heavy on the japanese), but the expensive pretentious type. but, at the same time deservedly so becasue they are damn good.
- BIX , financial district san francisco: californian cuisine, all around goodness.
- boboquivari's, marina san francisco: best steak i've ever had, and i've had a lot of it. their crab is damn good too
- michael mina's, union square: uh.. okay, so this one is not so much cheaper than chez panisse, but SO MUCH BETTER, imo. and u get about 30 different mini courses.

just my $o.o2!
